QURANIC LANGUAGE DIVISION INTRODUCTION The Quranic Language Division (QLD) has been one of the major divisions of CELPAD when the IIUM began its operation in 1983. The QLD accommodates a wide range of students who intend to further their studies in all Kulliyyahs at the IIUM. These include those who do not have any knowledge of Arabic as well as those who received their education fully or partly in Arabic. The courses offered by QLD look into the needs of local and foreign students at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. COURSE OBJECTIVE The Quranic Language Programme aims at developing students' linguistic ability in both theoretical and communicational contexts. The grammar and structure of the Arabic Language are sought from a pragmatic perspective that is to say that intension of the division is to enhance the skills of speaking and writing by means of the structures. Our main objectives are divided into two kinds:
COURSES OFFERED 1. PRE-SESSIONAL ARABIC This level is provided for those students required to take LQ courses on the basis of their Arabic Placement Test (APT) results. 2. ELEMENTARY ARABIC These courses are for those students of beginning levels in Arabic who are
admitted to the programme of the study and the same time either exempted from
taking courses in English other than Pre-sessional. 3. INTERMEDIATE ARABIC In this course the emphasis is placed on the continued development of listening, speaking and writing skill. The student is expected to acquire the basic skills of how to write a well-developed composition by means of learning how to join sentences and paragraphs. In addition, more attention is given to the Quranic style and the style of Hadith. 4. ADVANCED ARABIC This course aims at the expansion of students' knowledge of Islamic Arabic, active vocabulary and syntax as a continuation of the intermediate level. Students are expected to be more acquainted with the Islamic terminology in order to help them perform well in the fields of their specialization. Students are also assigned to read from Arabic sources and reference books and to summarize their main ideas. 5. SKILLS This level is intended to expand the student's knowledge of Arabic in all areas of language proficiency. The focus here placed on reading developed texts pertaining to the student's field of study. It also concentrates on writing long paragraphs, speaking as much as the student can and listening to Arabic texts and dialogues. The Arabic at this level is communicational in nature. It enables the student to speak, write and reading fluently. At the end of this level the student is expected to write well-developed composition, summarize long texts comprehend passages of difficult vocabulary and communicate his ideas in Arabic. 6. ARABIC FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES This course is designed for students to help them to write research papers. In this course the student is required to write papers, deliver a speech and make a presentation. To ensure the quality of these activities the focus is on stylistic aspects of the language. By the end of the course, students are required to submit a project paper as part of the assessment of this course. |
