:: TRIP TO THE HISTORIC CITY OF MALACCA
The City of Melaka is steep in history. It takes two hours by bus to get there non-stop. There are so many places to visit in Melaka. The itinerary is still being planned, but will include a visit to the padang (field) where the date of the declaration of independence was first announced by the first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1957. Part of the padang is now a modern square recently renovated with shopping outlets, selling handicrafts and daily needs. We might also take a walk on Jonker Street, the antique row, and an ancient quarter of the city, which has seen many transformations due to the colonial invasions of different groups of people since the 1400’s. The place is now filled with outlets selling handicrafts and mementos. You may also visit old Baba Chinese courtyard houses along Jonker Street. On the way back, we will follow the Klebang coastal road, and stop by an award-winning kampung (village) in Masjid Tanah, near the sea (Straits of Malacca). You will see many kampungs, actually, on the ride to Melaka.
The journey starts early, at 7:30 am and arrives back in KL by 8 pm. Only 40 seats are available (one bus) at around RM100 per person. You may start reserving your seats now and pay when you arrive for the conference. Write to englishasiaconference2008@ yahoo.com with the subject “Melaka Trip.”
