First ISTAC International Conference on Islamic Science and the Contemporary World

The International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), International Islamic University Malaysia, is organizing its “First International Conference on Islamic Science and the Contemporary World” in January 2008.
The organizers of the conference are particularly interested in papers that address:

(i) The Formation of Scientific Mind in Classical Islamic Civilization
Suggested titles:
• The Relationships between Religion and Science
• Continuity and Change in the history of Islamic Science
• The Formation of Islamic Scientific Mind: A Case of Muslim intellectuals and scholars
• Curricula for the Education of Muslim Scientists
• The Islamic Scientific Institutions during Classical Period: Observatories, Hospitals, Colleges etc.
• Science as a Profession in Classical Islam (i.e. Physicians, Navigator etc.)
• The Various Universal Figures in Islamic Scientific Enterprise
• Patronization in Islamic Science
• The Decline of Classical Islamic Science

(ii) The Impact of Modern Western Science and Technology in the Muslim World
Suggested titles:
• The Secularization of Science
• The Impact of Colonial Educational Policies and Curricula on Science Education in Muslim World
• Muslim Responses to Modern Science & Technology

(iii) Towards Making Islamic Scientific Worldview Relevant to Contemporary Science Education.
Suggested titles:
• Re-Formulation of Scientific Educational Policies in the Modern Muslim World
• Roles of Governments, Private Sectors and the Media
• Muslim Scientific Education and the Contemporary World Order

Writers are requested to focus on themes and ideas and avoid descriptive and biographical details of figures of Islamic Science.
