ADMISSION INTO AIKOL

ACADEMIC SYSTEM

CREDIT HOUR SYSTEM

The system is based on a quantified curriculum, whereby a certain number of credit hours are assigned to each course stipulated in the programme requirement in order to graduate.

AIKOL

The number of credit hours assigned to each course reflects the academic load that a student carries. There would normally be three contact hours a week for a course that carries three (3) credit hours.

Since the programmes are not strictly structured, students may register for courses of their own choice in each semester in accordance with their individual study plans. However, this is on the condition that :

  1. The chosen courses are offered in that semester;
  2. By registering for the course, the student is not violating any regulations set by AIKOL; and
  3. The student fulfils all graduations requirements within the give time-period.
The system reflects its attitude of treating each student as an individual with specific needs. It enables students to play an active role in planning and managing their studies, from course registration to graduation. This flexibility should enable them to optimize their performance, bearing in mind their own abilities, needs and interests.

AIKOL

ACADEMIC WORKLOAD

A student is normally expected to carry between 15 and 21 credit hours per semester. The minimum workload for a regular semester is 12 credit hours and the maximum is 24. However, the maximum is allowed only under special circumstances.

Regardless of the number of credit hours, students are not allowed to exceed 28 contact hours per week. For the short semester, students are allowed to take a maximum of six credit hours or 32 contact hours per week.

The minimum workload for students receiving scholarship awards or loans may differ from those shown above as they are determined by sponsoring agency. Generally, a course carries 3 credit hours.

ADD/DROP AND WITHDRAWAL OF COURSES

Add/Drop exercise takes place one week prior to the commencement of the new semester. Whereas, application for withdrawal of a course is allowed within the fourth (4th) and the tenth (10th) week of a regular semester with a fee of RM300 per course.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials, seminars, etc. conducted for the courses for which they are registered. Attendance of not less than 80% is required to be eligible for sitting in the final examination.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE

A student who wishes to spend a period of time away from the University may apply for a leave of absence by filing in the relevant form and providing acceptable reasons.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)

Two kinds of Grade Point Average (GPA) are used. The Semester GPA is computed by dividing the quality points earned (product of grade points and credit hours) by the number of credit hours attempted in a given semester. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed by dividing the total quality points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted at the university up to that point in time.

The system of education employed by the university encourages interaction between lecturers and students and requires active participation from students. This provides an environment conducive for continuous assessment to take place. Grades obtained, therefore, do not only reflect performance in the final examination but also in ongoing assessment (assignments, projects, quizzes and/or tests).

To be recommended by AIKOL for graduation, an undergraduate student must have met the following conditions :

  1. The student must fulfil all academic requirements set by the University, Kulliyyah and Department, including languages and Tilawah, with a CGPA of not less than 2.0.
  2. The student must be free of any debts owed to the Univsersity, monetary or otherwise (excluding approved financial loans made out to the students by the University) and cleared of any pending disciplinary charges.
  3. The student must fulfil all extra-curricular requirements set by the University.
  4. The student must satisfactorily meet any other conditions for graduation set by the University.
